Design Statement | The client’s coastal New England roots inspired this Shingle style design for a lakefront lot. With a background in interior design, her ideas strongly influenced the process, presenting both challenge and reward in executing her exact vision. Vintage coastal style grounds a thoroughly modern open floor plan, designed to house a busy family with three active children. A primary focus was the kitchen, and more importantly, the butler’s pantry tucked behind it. Flowing logically from the garage entry and mudroom, and with two access points from the main kitchen, it fulfills the utilitarian functions of storage and prep, leaving the main kitchen free to shine as an integral part of the open living area.

Design Statement | In this remodel, the client wanted more space for recreation and entertaining as well as a peaceful retreat in their existing home. A detached two-car garage provided the ideal medium for this purpose, in which the biggest challenge was minimizing the visual impact of the transformation. A gable-ended addition to the garage and a half-story above allowed for a sport court and a large entertaining space, without appearing too massive from the street. A bridge creates an interior connection between the home and the garage’s upper level.

Design Statement | This variation on the designer’s best-selling stock plan offers a twist on the original plan, adding some of the modifications most commonly requested by buyers while keeping its best features intact. The designer focused on the bedrooms and bathrooms for this update. The master suite was split from the family bedrooms and placed at the back of the home for privacy. The family bedrooms benefit from more closet space and a new Jack-and-Jill bath vs. the hall bath they shared with guests in the original home.

Design Statement | The client wanted a dramatic entryway that would not overpower this single-story design, and the designer complied with this unique portico. On this beautiful wooded site, the organic nature of Arts and Crafts style influences the design, taking it to the next level with an eyebrow-shaped pediment that resembles an upscale earthen dwelling. The shallower curve of the transom echoes the roofline. Paired columns on stone piers, brick accents, and a wood ceiling complete the picture.

Design Statement | A dramatic face lift and interior redesign transformed this vacation home without adding a square inch to the original footprint. The result is a far more functional home that takes much better advantage of its lakefront location. Stone and shake siding, paired columns, and gable brackets transform the original Cape Cod into an Arts and Crafts cottage, complete with a new front porch. Similar details on the back create a rear elevation with lake-friendly appeal. The result is a rarity in residential design: a home that looks great from every angle.

Design Statement | This plan was designed for the move-up buyer, a family of stable size that wants a higher level of luxury without unnecessary space. A straightforward footprint saves construction dollars that can be allocated instead to the architectural details associated with upscale homes, while a perfectly executed layout provides elegant efficiency. The stone-and-shake façade features an appealing entry portico and unique shutter detailing that builds on the barn door trend.
